Ponce Inlet Micro Church Drive

Northland’s Ponce Inlet micro church wrapped its annual “Fill A Backpack” drive by delivering two carloads—24 fully stocked backpacks, teacher wish-list items, supplies, and cash—valued at about $2,000 to R.J. Longstreet Elementary, a school with one of the highest student homelessness rates in Volusia County. The effort engaged Harbour Village neighbors, assembling boy and girl backpacks for each K–5 grade and delivering them in time for the first day of school, welcomed by Principal Amy Richardson and Counselor Sarah Marcus. In May, the group raised $1,325 for foster children at its 3rd Annual Afternoon Tea and next plans a Thanksgiving-season food drive for R.J. Longstreet. Northland’s Ponce Inlet service meets Sundays at 9 a.m.

Ponce Inlet Micro Church Drive
Yields Back-to-School Jackpot

Northland’s Ponce Inlet micro church recently wrapped up its annual “Fill A Backpack” drive, netting two carloads brimming with 24 filled backpacks, teacher wish list items, school supplies, and cash gifts—valued at $2,000 total—for Volusia County students in need.

“It was a great success,” said coordinator Peggy Hawkins. “We filled four backpacks for grades K-5, filling two boy backpacks and two girl backpacks for each grade level.”

This opportunity to serve King Jesus attracted not only Northland attendees. It engaged others from the community of Harbour Village, where the church meets.

“They very generously provided all that we could ask for, and more,” Peggy said.

Drive participants shopped for the treasures, stuffed the backpacks, packed the cars, and delivered the back-to-school bounty to nearby R.J. Longstreet Elementary School, on the Daytona Beach peninsula a few miles north of Harbour Village.

“R.J. Longstreet Elementary School has one of the highest rates of student homelessness in Volusia County,” Peggy explained.

The gifts were welcomed by Amy Richardson, school principal, and Sarah Marcus, school counselor, and arrived in time to bless students on their first day of school this past Monday.

The backpack drive was just one mission event staged by the active Ponce Inlet church family. In May, they welcomed 50 ladies to their 3rd Annual Afternoon Tea and charity raffle, raising $1,325 to help foster children.

Their next planned outreach is a food drive, again to benefit R.J. Longstreet Elementary School, just before the Thanksgiving holiday season.
