On Mission – Here, There and Everywhere

On Mission – Here, There and Everywhere

Psalm 67 (NIV)

May God be gracious to us and bless us
     and make his face shine on us –
so that your ways may be known on earth,
     your salvation among all nations.

May the peoples praise you, God;
     may all the peoples praise you.
May the nations be glad and sing for joy,
     for you rule the peoples with equity
and guide the nations of the earth.
     May the peoples praise you, God;
may all the peoples praise you.

The land yields its harvest;
   God, our God, blesses us.
May God bless us still,
     so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.

The mission of the church is to glorify God in worship, proclaim the gospel, and serve the nations by making Christlike disciples who make disciples. From Creation and God’s promise to Abraham to the return of Christ Jesus, we are on mission with God!  He has blessed us to be a blessing to others (Genesis 12:3)

The purpose of the church is to carry out God’s global mandate of witnessing to all the nations as we declare His name and His kingdom here on earth (Matthew 24:14).

Missions is our obedience to the Great Commission: “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).]

As John R.W. Stott said,

“We must be global Christians with a global vision because our God is a global God.”

Missions is our church’s demonstration of the greatest commandments. Jesus said: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:36-40).

Missions at Northland Church has been fully alive for more than four decades. We work with people and in places that we have prayerfully explored, discovered and invited to form relationships with us. One of our keys to partnership is to collaborate for the benefit of others so that together we embrace the Good News and good deeds. All of these are in response to Jesus saying, “Be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
