In the services this weekend, we gave an update about the search for our next Lead Pastor. Although we are not there yet, the Pastor Search Committee has been making good progress in the Lead Pastor Search in recent weeks,As we continue to take deliberate steps forward in the process, we are also waiting on God’s timing during this process and He is teaching us patience!
“But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”
It is important to first acknowledge Pastor Gus for his amazing leadership of Northland during this interim period! We are so thankful to God for him because he has stood in the gap providing us with leadership and stability as we wait for God to reveal His choice for our next Lead Pastor. We have also been grateful for you and for your prayers for the Succession Planning Committee, Pastor Search Committee, and the Elders during this time. As you may know, the Succession Planning Committee has not wavered from praying together on a weekly basis every Tuesday morning for wisdom, unity, and deference to each other and to God’s will for who He is calling to be our next Lead Pastor. We have experienced amazing unity together and we have seen the power of prayer in how God has moved in our hearts and given us grace to listen to each other’s unique perspectives and the humility to defer to one another as we set aside our own agendas.
We also owe both Nick Maroulis and Mike Kemp a debt of gratitude for their tireless efforts leading the Succession Planning Committee and Pastor Search Committee and spearheading the focus on prayer and fasting throughout the process. As you know, the Succession Planning Committee and the Pastor Search Committee are comprised of congregants, staff, pastors, and elders and we are grateful to them for their hours and hours of developing the plans, policies, job description, and procedures for searching for our next Lead Pastor. They have followed up on that by reading pages and pages of materials and listening to hours and hours of sermons by 7 different pastoral candidates presented by our Pastor Search Consultant, Slingshot, out of the 100+ candidates that applied for the position. The entire Pastor Search Committee has participated in the 2 to 3 interviews with each of the candidates as well as interviews with candidates and their wives together after which they narrowed the search to 2 candidates who were then presented to the Elders. In recent weeks, the Elders have been focusing our attention to the candidates presented and have been in deeper conversations with them regarding whether God is calling them to Northland to be our next Lead Pastor. It is important to note that even after the Pastor Search Committee presented the candidates to the Elders, the Elders requested that they continue to be involved in the follow up conversations with the candidates …their job is not done until we have called our next Lead Pastor and he has accepted the calling!
With all of that said, this process has not been linear, but has been more cyclical in nature and we are waiting patiently upon the Lord as He unfolds the process before us and as we follow Him in His timing. Our Pastor Search Consultant originally let us know that the search process could take up to 12-18 months and with succession planning starting on May 9th of last year and the pastor search itself starting on August 6th, we are still well within that window. We have been progressing well and have truly enjoyed getting to know each of our pastor candidates who were from as far north as Canada and as far west as Texas. It is our hope that God will call our next Lead Pastor sooner than August (which would be 12 months into the process), but as we wait, let’s continue to pray together for His timing and His selection. Also please pray for the next Lead Pastor’s family and his present congregation as they prepare for a new season in their lives just as our congregation is preparing for a new season in ours.
