Cain and Abel (July 20-21)
We worship the God who provides. This weekend in children’s church we are learning the story of Cain and Abel. We are reminded to thank God our Provider who gives us what we need. That includes fair punishment, mercy, and forgiveness when we do wrong in His eyes.
When you sit at home: Ages 3-K read Genesis 4:2b-7a. Grades 1-3 read Genesis 4:2b-9. Grades 4-5 read Genesis 4:2b-9, 12-16. Abel chose to give his best to God. Cain did not give his best and he chose to be angry about Abel’s blessing. What right choices could Cain have made? Have you ever complained when someone else has received something good? What would have been a better choice?
When you walk along the road: God wants us to give Him our best and to love each other. How can you give God your best? Decide on one way you can give God your best this week. What are some ways you can show love to others? Decide on one way you can show love to someone this week.
Ages 4-K Whisper Verse: “Love one another.”
When you lie down: Pray this prayer each day this week: “God, thank You for the way You bless us when we give You our best. Help us to always give you our best and to be glad for others when they are blessed. Amen.”
When you get up: “Worry weighs a person down; but an encouraging word cheers a person up,” Proverbs 12:25. This week, play “Encouraging Words.” Decorate a small box or other container large enough for a note card. One person writes a note of encouragement to another family member (e.g. Tell the person what you like about him or her, draw a picture to tell the person you love them, or share a favorite Bible verse). Without the person seeing you do it,place the box somewhere they will see it and read the note. Now it’s that person’s turn to write a note to someone else! Keep the box moving! Share your encouraging words with each other or plan a special family time to end your week.
