Advent 1: Announcing the King (December 2-4)
This weekend we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent. Advent means coming–the coming of Jesus. It is the four weeks before Christmas when we prepare our hearts to celebrate Christmas.
One way we can celebrate the coming of King Jesus is by lighting candles on an Advent wreath. The Advent wreath is traditionally round; it has no end, just as God’s love for us has no end.
In Children's Church, we light the first candle of Advent: Mary’s Candle. Mary was a young teenager who loved God very much. God sent the angel Gabriel to bring her a special message about the coming of King Jesus.
When you walk along the road: The angel Gabriel shared the good news of the coming King to Mary and Joseph. We’ll also hear the story of how the angels shared the good news with the shepherds who when they saw the baby, went and told others about this amazing child. Jesus’ birth is exciting news to share. With whom could you share the good news?
When you lie down: Pray this prayer each day this week: “Lord, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus to be born. Thank You that Jesus is our King. Amen.”
When you get up: As a family, talk about how you can prepare your hearts for Christmas. Choose one night a week where you set aside time together to remember who Jesus is and what He has done for us. If you don’t have an Advent wreath, you can create your own with whatever you have available to you: traditional candles, battery-operated candles, or make your own paper candles.
KIDS: Did you get this weekend’s take home paper? No?? Download it below. And don’t forget to watch this weekend’s Delbert & Lello or Grade School sketch on the Northland Children’s Ministries mobile app.
PARENTS: There’s a devotional for you, too! Watch the video and download the materials at northlandchurch.net.
