Deuteronomy 26:1-11 (ESV)

Offerings of Firstfruits and Tithes

1 “When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, 2 you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. 3 And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, ‘I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’ 4 Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God.

5 “And you shall make response before the Lord your God, ‘A wandering Aramean was my father. And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. 6 And the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. 7 Then we cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. 8 And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders. 9 And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O Lord, have given me.’ And you shall set it down before the Lord your God and worship before the Lord your God. 11 And you shall rejoice in all the good that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you.

About This Sermon Series

What do you think of when you hear the word bless? Home decor? A response to a sneeze? This word may seem a bit old-fashioned to contemporary ears, but the concept of blessing has a long and rich history. In ancient cultures, people blessed one another with material and social benefits, but there was more to it. Blessings, both bestowed and received, played a crucial part in how the world operated. Blessings helped create and sustain healthy relationships that were marked by gratitude and promise-keeping. It was a privilege to bless.

Bless is a verb. This means that blessing should be active.

Bless is a command. The Bible tells us to bless God and bless other people.

Blessing is reciprocal. As we bless God and other people, we are promised a blessing in return!

God is the Source of blessing. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father, who bestows abundant blessings on all that He has created. Jesus Christ gave the ultimate blessing, His precious life. The Holy Spirit blesses from within with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

In this new series, we’ll learn what the Bible teaches about blessing others through our generosity and service. Designated as ambassadors of God’s generosity, Christians learn to give God’s way. When Christians serve others as Christ did, blessings overflow in practical ways. As we follow God’s example, we too will bless.

A Heart of Generosity

Do you ever wonder why God wants His people to be generous? What difference does this act of obedience make to our hearts?

In 1 Timothy 6:18-19, Paul counsels Timothy on how to teach his flock to be generous:

“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”

From this teaching we learn that generosity unlocks our hearts and helps us be willing to share. Sharing our earthly wealth has eternal benefits because doing so lays up spiritual treasure in heaven. When we give, we take hold of true or authentic life.

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus teaches us more about money and our hearts:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Jesus continues in verse 24,

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

I experienced my own change of heart about giving when I accepted Christ long ago. When I inquired how to be obedient to the Lord in my giving, I was told that a good place to start would be to give a tithe (10%) of my income. A pastor explained that 10% was the Old Testament requirement for the Israelites, and so was the “before Christ” requirement. But, now that Christ has come, our generosity should be even greater. Going from not giving anything to the church to 10% required sacrifice for sure. However, learning to give more served to strengthen my relationship with Christ and helped me know I was now part of a new life and a new economy of God. I felt very much like I was experiencing what Paul describes as the results of sacrificial giving in 2 Corinthians 8:7:

“But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” (read verses 1-6 as well).

As you can see from the chart, we have set a higher giving goal for October at $609,947. This is because the time between October and the end of the year has traditionally been higher giving months for us. I encourage you to consider putting your generosity to work by blessing Northland Church with your financial  support.

Thank you again for your generosity.
