Acts 1:12-26 (NIV)

12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.”

18 (With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:

“‘May his place be deserted;
   let there be no one to dwell in it, and,

“‘May another take his place of leadership.’

21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

Genesis 1:1-2 (NIV)

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Genesis 1:26-28 (NIV)

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image,
   in the image of God he created them;
   male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Prayer Focus

“Lord, we pray that the candidates being interviewed to be our new senior pastor will clearly know whether or not they are called to be at Northland. May they fully understand what coming to Northland would mean for them, their families, and the congregation they’d be leaving. Help them respond to a true and deep calling from You, and not be distracted by their own ideas or agendas.”-Rebecca Lang, Succession Planning Committee Member

“With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith.”
- 2 Thessalonians 1:11 NIV

Worship Focus

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. He proceeds from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. (from The Nicene Creed)

About This Sermon Series

The Book of Acts takes us on a whirlwind journey of how the Spirit infiltrated the world via an unlikely band of disciples. And this is still His mission. The Book of Acts takes us on a whirlwind journey of how the Spirit infiltrated the world via an unlikely band of disciples. And this is still His mission. By indwelling people like you and me, the Spirit of Jesus will use each of us to reach the world with His love. The advent of the Spirit for individuals is the turning point of God’s great plan.

Some would argue that the book of Acts is primarily about the Church - its formation, persecution, and growth. But, the Bible tells us that there is a Force that undergirds the formation of the Church and all of her activity, a Power that is thrilling and indispensable. This non-negotiable element is the Spirit of God. The Eternal Spirit empowers both then and now and helps Christians live out our purpose, as individuals, as a church, and as the Church until Jesus Christ comes again.

Year’s-end financial update – Thank You!

The end of 2021 brought us to the completion of the first half of our fiscal year. Our 6-month budget total amounted to $3,898,235. As of December 31st, we received $3,719,464. With 95% of our needed budget met, we are short by $178,771. But, we are grateful to report that we exceeded our December budget for giving. This made it possible for us to make up some of the fiscal year-to-date shortfall we came into the month with.

THANK YOU to all those that stepped up to help us finish the year strong. 1,587 of you donated during this 6-month period. We even added over 100 new donors in the past two weeks. Your faithfulness in giving to Northland is a demonstration of your love for Christ and your desire to make him known. Your generosity brings to mind 2 Cor 8:1-7, a section sometimes called The Collection for the Lord’s People. Verse 7 says,

But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

We want to keep excelling in all of Northland’s financial objectives. The end of our fiscal year is June 30th, 2022. You play an integral part in helping us fully fund our budget for this year. Since God’s work is not done, Northland’s isn’t either. As we begin a new series on the book of Acts, I’m looking forward to seeing how the Holy Spirit will move in our church. May God bless us all as we begin a new year serving Him.
