READ TEXT+

Psalm 136:1-26 (NIV)

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.

4 to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
5 who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
6 who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
7 who made the great lights—
His love endures forever.
8 the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
9 the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.

10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt
His love endures forever.
11 and brought Israel out from among them
His love endures forever.
12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;
His love endures forever.

13 to him who divided the Red Sea asunder
His love endures forever.
14 and brought Israel through the midst of it,
His love endures forever.
15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;
His love endures forever.

16 to him who led his people through the wilderness;
His love endures forever.

17 to him who struck down great kings,
His love endures forever.
18 and killed mighty kings—
His love endures forever.
19 Sihon king of the Amorites
His love endures forever.
20 and Og king of Bashan—
His love endures forever.
21 and gave their land as an inheritance,
His love endures forever.
22 an inheritance to his servant Israel.
His love endures forever.

23 He remembered us in our low estate
His love endures forever.
24 and freed us from our enemies.
His love endures forever.
25 He gives food to every creature.
His love endures forever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.

DIGGING DEEPER

Psalm 136 is titled in some Bibles as the “Great Psalm of Remembering.” This psalm is a reminder of who God is, what God has done, and what the response of God’s people should be.

In weaving the picture presented in Psalm 136, it starts and ends with the giving of thanks to God who is good, the God of gods, the Lord of lords, and the God of heaven. The middle section of the Psalm recounts that God is the creator and sustainer of the universe who cares for His people and rescues them from their enemies. It shares how God brings His people into The Promised Land, where they will be provided for and freed from their enemies.

In Psalm 136, it is also noteworthy that twenty-six times, once in every verse, the psalmist states, “God’s love endures forever.” This phrase is a reminder of God’s forever faithfulness to the people whom He loves. Through God’s promise of love, which lasts forever, God gives His people courage and perspective to move forward, always counting on His promises and His faithfulness.

Lord, we remember and are thankful for who you are and for all that you have done. From the beginning of time, you have loved your people and you will always love us with a love that endures forever. We ask that you give us protection from our enemies and provision for the days ahead. Give us a passion to love others as you have loved us, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with our world that so desperately needs you.

Baptism Opportunity

Saturday, January 28, and Sunday, January 29 during weekend worship services

Baptism is an outward expression of our inward faith and a declaration to the world that we've chosen to follow Jesus Christ. It signifies the washing away of the old life and helps solidify our commitment as followers of Jesus Christ if you have never been baptized before this is your chance to take this step of obedience in Christ! If you have recommitted yourself to following Christ and desire to make a public statement of that through baptism, you are also welcome. Be sure to invite your friends and family to celebrate with you!
