Independence, by Becky Hunter

Bright, powerful streaks of intense color scream across the dark sky on the 4th of July and bring lots of smiles. On the 4th, flags fly with a bit more notice than usual and outdoor grilling makes the whole country hungry for lunch. All of that to celebrate being an independent nation. Ever since we told England “You are not the boss of me” we’ve been all about hooraying US. Because if there is anything we humans all have in common it is a distaste for being told what to do. Goodness, even a two-year-old knows that!

So how can this independent spirit of ours make us most effective for what God has called us to do while we live on this earth? It can’t really, unless it is rooted in gratitude. It’s been said, “If you think Independence Day is America's defining holiday, think again. Thanksgiving deserves that title, hands-down.”  So as the sky lights up this 4th of July, I will look higher than the explosions to the One above it all and be grateful.

“And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Ephesians 5:20 (NLT)
