Advent 1: Isaiah Tells of the Promised Child (Dec 1-3)

Northland Children

We worship the God of Peace. God loved the world so much, He sent His Son Jesus as the Prince of Peace to bring peace between God and man.

During Advent, the four Sundays before Christmas, we get our hearts ready to celebrate the coming of King Jesus. God gave us the greatest gift of all by sending His Son Jesus to us.

When you sit at home: Read Isaiah 9:2-3, 6-7. In the Bible, darkness sometimes stands for life separated from God. The prophet Isaiah said that people who walk in darkness will see a great light. Jesus is the great light Isaiah described. Isaiah’s words prophesied Jesus’ birth! What are the names Isaiah said Jesus would be called?

When you walk along the road: How does Jesus bring light to the world?

When you lie down: Pray this prayer each day this week: “Thank You, Lord, for keeping Your promise to send us Your Son Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Help us as we prepare our hearts to celebrate the coming of King Jesus. Amen.”

ADVENT DEVOTIONAL

*For more ideas on celebrating Advent with your family, download this free Advent for Families Devotional and Planner.

When you get up: Today is the first Sunday in Advent! If you have a nativity set or an Advent wreath, put them in a special where your family can gather to read scripture, talk about the first Christmas, and light the Advent candle.

Candle: Today, we light the first candle. Light the first candle. It is called the Candle of Hope to remind us of the hope Jesus brings to the world.

Scripture: Read Isaiah 9:2-3, 6-7. Isaiah prophesied of Jesus’ birth. He called Jesus “a great light.” Jesus is the Light of the world and He is always with us.

Nativity: Set up the stable. If you have a manger that is separate from the baby, place it in the stable. If you do not, you may choose to wrap a small box and place it in the stable. Also, add any animals you have (Save the sheep for week 3.). Talk about where Jesus was born and the animals that would have been there.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to earth. Thank You for giving us hope. Help us to share that hope with others as we focus on You this Advent season. Amen.

Sing: “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”

Read scripture passages about giving and receiving gifts: John 3:16; Romans 6:23; Matthew 6:1-4; 7:7-12; 25:35-40. What is God’s gift to us? What do these passages say about giving? How do you feel about giving and receiving gifts?

Advent Photo Challenge: During the four weeks of Advent, we’ll be posting a daily challenge for you on Facebook! Included with the challenge will be a scripture and word of the day.
