Born and educated in Sri Lanka, Dr. Sherrard left a career in accounting and auditing to become the founding director of Sri Lanka Youth for Christ in 1965. He was recruited as the executive director of Hawaii Youth for Christ in 1974, and was appointed the Americas area director in 1994. In 1996, he was elected president of Youth for Christ International and served until 1998. Sam simultaneously served as a senior pastor in Pearl City Hawaii from 1978 to 2007, when he resigned and moved to live in retirement in Deland.
Many leaders in Sri Lanka, Hawaii and around the world were discipled by Sam. He and his wife, Manel, his ministry partner of 48 years, are parents of four children. Their eldest daughter, Grace, went to Heaven in 1970. They have two sons, John and Joshua, who live in Seattle and Tempe respectively with their six grandchildren; and a daughter, Esther, who lives in Alexandria, Va.
Sam and Manel are involved in Northland’s prayer ministry, have helped with LifeHope and have volunteer to be Neighborhood Connectors and Hosts. Sam has also helped train leaders in India and Bangladesh, and has a burden for men’s ministry. “We are blessed to serve together, and I am humbled and honored to serve as an elder at Northland.”
