Choosing God, Circumstances, or Temptation

"What do you seek?"
In John 1:38, Jesus essentially asks us: "What are your goals?" Inherent in that question is a commentary about how the choices we make ultimately determine the outcome and influence of our lives. Here, we're challenged to take inventory of our lives — taking a look at where we're headed and analyzing how our decisions align with and/or effect our goals.

We've heard freedom begins with Christ ... but freedom from what? We're all trapped and being limited in life by things that enslave us. Here we begin to zero in on specific areas of bondage, beginning with one we're all familiar with: Money.

Freedom Begins with Christ

One of the reasons that Jesus came, according to Luke 4, was to set the captives free. Our culture has attractions. As a result, a whole lot of us are enslaved to our appetites and our Imaginings—everything from substance abuse, to food, to sexual addiction, to fear ... we go right back to it, we don’t feel normal without it, and it preoccupies our day so much that we cannot function as we were meant to function.

Christ sets us free from bondage. There are all kinds of appetites and habits that falsely govern our lives, and it’s time to be set free.

AN ADVENT SERIES: Advent is the traditional season in which the Church responds to the coming of the Messiah. This series explores the convergence of heaven and earth that took place with the birth of Christ. Respond to God

When we come to God, it is because we are responding to His voice. It is God who initiates; God who calls; God who saves. When we truly see Him for Who He is, we are compelled to worship HIm, to respond to HIs nature. When we respond, others are blessed. When we are the church, we respond to God for the benefit of others.

I AM… not myself

We are meant for relationships — deeper, defining relationships — with God and with other people. What if part of who we are, in our strengths and in our weaknesses, is designed to complement another's identity? Does that knowledge transform how you view your current and potential relationships? Still within the larger perspective of “Building Heaven-like Families,” this series tackles how God is shaping our individual souls ... for the sake of others.

Building Heaven-Like Families

God's sacrifice removed the barriers to our close relationship with Him. Similarly, we must work to remove the barriers between ourselves and those in our immediate and extended families. This includes making sure that those closest to us have access to us, having an attitude of respect, learning to resolve conflict and more.

The Gift of Presence

Christmas is all about the presents, right? Wrong. Christmas is all about the presence. God's presence. Yet, God is so big, it's often hard to understand that presence — to grasp, let alone glory in it. That's why throughout Scripture, we see God limit His presence to a specific place so that His people can encounter Him. Leading up to the celebration of the birth of the ultimate consummate expression of God — Jesus Christ — spend time exploring The Gift of Presence.

I Have My Reasons

You have your reasons. Grounded in past experience, your reasons cause you to act as you do today. They mold your opinions. They are the filter through which all your interaction and information tend to flow. Right or wrong, you have your reasons. In this series, Dr. Joel C. Hunter steps away from discussing people's intellectual challenges to Christianity and takes a step toward facing some of people's personal hurdles — their reasons for objecting to a transforming faith in Jesus.
