God at Work in the Amazon

The J. J. Mesquita-Mackenzie was "home" for Northland's Brazil team on the Black River. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to go on a Distributed Journey to Brazil with 25 other Northland participants. The friendships and relationships that developed were enough to inspire me to want to return and encourage others to experience God at work in the Amazon. I grew up watching my older brother and sister travel to various countries on Northland mission trips, always eager to experience my own journeys. I dreamed of going to Germany like...

Closing out our trip to Brazil

In 5 hours we’ll be on a plane bound for the US. In the 10 days we’ve had here in the Amazon, we’ve played soccer a dozen times, attended 5 church services, watched two Brazil World Cup matches with locals and realized that ultimately this trip could never be about the numbers. We spent time with kids from Athletes in Christ who we played with last year as well. When we left for the Amazon two of the youth, Lucas and China (shee-na) came with us on the boat. Their...

Ready for the River

Our team’s time in Manaus, Brazil, is drawing to an end. We are preparing to go down the Black River where we will sleep on a riverboat for the next three nights. Just before we depart, we’ll briefly see the other Brazil team as they return to Manaus before heading home. We saw Felipe Santos from the river team earlier, who reported that their time along the Black River was well spent. We are excited to start this last phase of our trip, but we are also sad to leave...

They seem to really like Americans in Manaus

Us on TV - Computer from Nathan Clark on Vimeo. This year our Distributed Journey soccer team has been interviewed by five television channels. The TV stations mostly want to know what would bring a team from America into Manaus, Brazil, to play soccer. That line of questioning provides the Athletes in Christ founder, Lucio, with an amazing platform to share their ministry with the larger Manaus population. Two of the interviews happened just before the Brazil vs. North Korea match of the World Cup. We watched the game at...

Our first days in Brazil

We left Florida three days ago with two Northland teams destined for Brazil. Yesterday the teams split up to focus on their respective ministries. The boat team left to begin their six-day trip along the Black River to serve by running VBS camps and caring for families in villages along the river where IPM has ongoing ministry. Their 26-person team is laden with gifts and supplies for the trips to help them entertain, construct and ultimately bear the image of Christ to people who frequently hear the gospel through local...

Brazil teams departing for DJs

Friday night just before midnight two teams will depart for Brazil. One team will serve villages along the rivers in the Amazon and the other will partner will a soccer ministry in Manaus. Between the two teams about 40 people are flying into Manaus for a week and a half of ministry along side our partner church in Brazil. As we prepare please pray for us. Specifically for: • Safe travels on our flight from Miami to Manuas • Nader, on the soccer trip, has a potentially broken ankle that...

Losing Games, Winning Hearts

You may know that English is not the most widely spoken language in the world, but you probably don’t know what is the most common language. No, it’s not Chinese … it’s actually soccer. Not only is soccer the ultimate world language, but it was also a tool used to break down cultural barriers and share the Gospel during a distributed journey in August. Our team of eight traveled to Manaus, Brazil, to join with Northland’s partner church Igreja Presbyteriana De Manaus (IPM) in ongoing soccer ministries. IPM is a...

A lifetime of experience crammed into 4 days

What days we’ve had! Since leaving Manaus for villages along the Rio Negro it feels as if we’ve had a life time of experiences crammed into only a few days. We had the pleasure of joined with our brothers and sisters at the Presbyterian Church of Manaus for worship on Sunday night, then headed to the riverboat for our second leg of this journey. The boat was staffed by four wonderful Brazilians. The captain, Manuel, played with us during the games in the villages since we were two players short...

How to lose a game, injury list and readying for the river

Yesterday in the morning we played an older team that is preparing to play in the locale league’s championship game. We were outplayed in the first half, but as the game wore on it was satisfying to play more at their level of play. We ended the game losing 2-0, but winning their respect. Between the two, the respect was the far more important prize. Because our ultimate objective is to bear witness to Jesus and represent not just our church but also our host church, our credibility is largely...

Soccer, Nader, lost luggage and blisters -or- our second day in Brazil

When we first arrived in Manaus some 40 hours ago, there were three things missing: Dallas’ bag, James’ bag and our teammate Nader whose flight was delayed. While the bags have not shown up, Nader did late last night and today we were finally completed as a team. It’s a good thing he showed up, because we had a scrimmage and he was responsible for putting the ball in the net 3 times. We won, though probably owing to their great act of kindness in pitting us against a team...
