Praying Scripture Together

God is listening to the prayers of people around the world right now. Our Creator, who never sleeps nor slumbers, made us to be communicators, and not just with one another. Somehow in the majesty of God’s thoughtfulness, your words mean something significant. This means many great things for each of us. Most amazingly, though, it speaks much about God.

Read the Bible is a responsive section designed to help each of us to mediate on the truth of God’s Word. As our eyes take in the text before us, we are connecting to the very thoughts of the Holy Spirit. Eternity meets the present moment as you and I listen to God speak to us through this ancient narrative. So the very act of reading the Bible can be an act of responding to the God who has already taken the initiative to speak to us.

But there is more.

In the very same way that Pastor Vernon mentions that God reads the Scriptures along with us (see article link), there is a great power in reading and praying the Scriptures with one another. This webpage is designed for you to use in any way you see fit, but one great use for you to consider is reading the texts with someone else.

  • Read them aloud together.
  • Read them as prayers to your Creator.
  • Speak them to a friend, a co-worker or family member.
  • Read them when you wakeup in the morning, take lunch during the day, or pray them at night before you return to rest. If you are unable to physically do this with someone else, email one of the Scriptures to someone or text a portion to their phone as a reminder of God’s promises.

Each day's reading is split into three sections: Rising (morning), Reconnecting (midday), and Resting (evening). The practice of reading the Scriptures and praying them back to God is an ancient discipline that the early church exercised. There are many followers of Jesus around the world today who pray at set times during the day. When you read and pray these Scriptures, you are joining with them and all the saints who have gone before us.

The Rising Scripture is a selection of verses from various Psalms. Beginning the day with these texts is a helpful reminder of God’s character, beauty, and sovereignty over all creation.

The Reconnecting Scripture comes from The Book of Common Worship. These are prayers that many Christians have prayed over the years and reminds us of our need for God’s daily intervention.

The Resting Scripture has two parts: First is a selection from the New Testament, usually from the book of John. The second text is from the Epistles that closes the day with a reminder of God’s grace, evident through Jesus.

Finally, you might want to set a reminder for each prayer time during the day. Some people set up these reminders on their phones or in their daily planners to read at certain set hours. Others read and pray the Scriptures around the three meals of the day. You can do this however you wish. Just remember that the aim is to listen to God, to join others in praying, and to live a life that builds the Kingdom as we are each changed more into the image of Jesus.
